4 ways to celebrate Giving Tuesday today

December 1st, 2020

1. Help students struggling with learning challenges get a costly assessment required to access support from the Student AccessAbility Centre.

2. Feed our students during these difficult times with your donation of non-perishable food. Drop off items at the shipping doors at 4011 de Maisonneuve (parking lot entrance) Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 – 3 p.m.

3. Become a Secret Santa for children in care of Batshaw. To date, 20 ±¬ÁϺÚÉç employees have committed to 42 children. There are still two children waiting to be matched with a member of the ±¬ÁϺÚÉç community and there are more kids who are available. Contact faculty member Janice Harvey if interested. You can also refer to this info from the last D News.

4. Support basic needs in Tuapi
, Nicaragua, the community that welcomed North-South students for their Field Trip a few years ago. Two powerful hurricanes struck the community last month. The alumni and community have raised more than $6,000 but are hoping to reach their $10,000 goal to supply food and basic necessities.


Diane Gauvin will be our new Director General

November 19th, 2020

Diane Gauvin will be the new Director General of ±¬ÁϺÚÉç. On Nov. 18, following a recommendation from the Selection Committee and unanimous support from Senate, the Board of Governors appointed her to a five-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2021.

Diane has strong assets to lead a vision for ±¬ÁϺÚÉç and to rally and engage the community to move forward on that vision, according to the Board of Governors.

Trevor Williams, Head Coach of the ±¬ÁϺÚÉç Blues Div. 1 Women's Basketball Team, and Wanda Kagan, Manager of the ±¬ÁϺÚÉç Blues Div. 2 Women's Basketball Team, both knew Kamala Harris when she lived in Montreal as a teenager.

They have been interviewed about the Vice-President Elect of the United States, who will take up her new duties Jan. 20.


Three ±¬ÁϺÚÉç students featured as inspiring young Canadians

±¬ÁϺÚÉç students Kahenientha Cross and John Nathaniel Gertler and ±¬ÁϺÚÉç graduate Ella Noel were featured in a CBC news report in the lead up to The Nature of Things documentary, Rebellion. Scenes of students preparing for the climate march were filmed at ±¬ÁϺÚÉç last year.

The 60th anniversary season premiere of The Nature of Things hosted by David Suzuki on Nov. 6 features an action-filled documentary that captures the beginnings of a movement that is changing the world.

Rebellion brings viewers to the front lines of the climate rebellion, including ±¬ÁϺÚÉç on Sept. 26, 2019, the day before the historic climate march in Montreal with Greta Thunberg and 500,000 peaceful protesters.

Refugee Boulevard wins another major prize

Refugee Boulevard: Making Montreal Home After the Holocaust (refugeeboulevard.ca) has won the U.S. Oral History Association Mason Multi-Media Award. The SSHRC-funded project is the work of ±¬ÁϺÚÉç faculty members Nancy Rebelo and Stacey Zembrycki along with Anna Sheftel from St. Paul University and Eszter Andor from the Montreal Holocaust Museum.

The project was created in close collaboration with Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal in the post-WWII period.

Over the summer, the team created a virtual component to accompany the audio for those who can’t experience the tour in the neighborhood. Here are the links to the virtual tour:

"It is our hope that listening to survivors share their stories in the tour will open up conversations that help validate the roles immigrants play in our past and current communities," Nancy said.
