Kim Vose Jones Lifeboat: An Unnatural History

Join us on a fantastical journey inspired by natural history tableaux and dioramas, where animal forms provoke a wide range of social, political, ethical, and cultural issues.

When researching her family genealogy, Kim Vose Jones discovered her ancestor Ann Dodin arrived in Quebec in 1669, along with dozens of other young French girls commonly known as the Filles du Roi–shipped to the new world in order to assist in the colonial project of populating the land with French settlers.

Parallel with the fates of many humans fleeing genocide, war, and poverty across the globe, Jones’ project underlines the injustices displaced persons face, and as Jones writes, ‘we are ALL on a boat in some ways (though some ride yachts and others rafts)–the same precarious planetary boat we need to figure out how to navigate.’
